HUNTING

DAY HUNTS

While you are in New Zealand, we invite you to join us on a local hunting experience. We’d love to take you out hunting and share the local bush with you. It’s a great place to hunt with a good variety of country and plenty of game. This is a wonderful opportunity to unwind, enjoy being in the bush and have a successful hunt.
Your hunt will be entirely on private land. Mark will enjoy sharing his hunting domain with you; his family has hunted this area for 4 generations. Your hunt will take you through stunning native bush and over farmland. Using 4x4 quad bike (or walking) and your guide’s knowledge of the land, you’ll find that you’ll cover some ground. Along the way you’ll see red, fallow, and rusa deer as well as wild goats.

We’ll collect you from Chalet Eiger, and take you into the heart of the King Country. Rifles are supplied if needed. Please bring your camera, good walking shoes or boots and warm clothing. Warm clothing can be lent if needed. The prices for a day hunt, including a hearty lunch and pick up and return to Chalet Eiger are on request.

Hunting species: Red stag, Wild boar, Red and Fallow Hind, Goat, Turkey. Other species of deer are available, Rusa, Sika and Fallow. Different sized stags are also available. Taxidermy and expediting of trophies is not included in the price.

TROUT FISHING

TROUT FISHING IN THE STUNNING TAUPO REGION IS WORLD FAMOUS
The Taupo Fishery, made famous by American angler and author Zane Grey, offers year round fishing opportunities.  The Taupo Fishery is managed as a wild fishery of both rainbow and brown trout.  Rainbow trout eggs originally came from California in the 1880’s and were released into the lake where they immediately thrived.  Brown trout were introduced a few years later from Wales.  The conditions here proved to be perfect for trout and the populations are now self sustaining.  The opportunity to catch truly wild trout on the fly means Taupo is on every serious anglers list.

The Taupo Fishery is open year round for both lake and river fishing.  We can arrange a fishing experience to suit your sense of adventure.  This could be an evening trolling on the lake with a glass of wine watching the sunset, or a two day white-water rafting / fly fishing trip down the might Tongariro River.  If you want to try fly fishing for the first time we can arrange our guide to give you a fly casting lesson on the lawn the night before your adventure.

During winter (May - November) rainbow trout run from the lake up the rivers to spawn, providing great sport.

During summer (December - March) the rivers offer dry fly fishing opportunities including fishing large cicada’s which trout can take very aggressively off the surface.

The lake can be fished all year either trolling with down riggers or harling at the change of light.  Lake fishing can be a very relaxing way to spend some time on the water and see some of the local sights including the Maori Carvings in Mine Bay.

Chalet Eiger works with fishing guides who have years of fishing experience in the North Island and Lake Taupo area, who will specialise in making your adventure happen, and place a high priority on providing excellent service.

Top quality fly-fishing and fishing equipment, clothing, food and transport is provided; your guide will collect you from the lodge so all you need to do is enjoy the trip.

WORLD CLASS GOLF

Taupo has some great golf courses, including the world renowned Wairakei International Golf Club. This course was rated in the top 100 courses in the world by the prestigious US Golf Digest magazine in 2005, and has been described by many international golfers as like 'playing in a botanic garden'.

Then there is the Taupo Golf Club, offering two very different courses that are well worth a visit. The Centennial Course at the club is the longest women’s course in the country and hosts many of New Zealand’s top amateur events. The shorter, flatter and easier Tauhara Course is a nice alternative to its newer neighbour. Both courses have fairway watering which makes them playable in all seasons.

Absolutely stunning is the Kinloch Golf Club. The course is designed by Jack Nicklaus and nestled in a residential community with breath taking lake views.  It is now rated within the top 100 courses in the world outside of the United States.  Jack Nicklaus used the natural environment in the design to dictate the shapes of his golf holes. This has produced a beautiful but exceptionally challenging links-like course, in a beautiful and natural environment.

All of these golf courses are within a 15-minute drive from Taupo Township.
